Hawk & Handsaw – The Journal of Creative Sustainability publishes thought-provoking written and visual art that interprets and redefines notions of sustainability. The editorial board considers unsolicited materials on a rolling basis through the electronic submission form.
Genre considerations: We accept poetry, creative nonfiction, short stories, and visual art, as well as those works that question traditional genre boundaries. Writers may submit pieces up to 5,000 words. Excerpts from longer monographs are acceptable, provided they stand alone as an independent work. If applicable, citations should appear in MLA or Chicago Manual of Style format. Visual artists may submit up to 20 images of their work for consideration.
Submitting your manuscript: Manuscripts must be sent via the electronic submission form (PDF, doc, docx formats). If you are submitting multiple pages, be sure to include a header or footer with your name and page number on every page.
Submitting your art: We accept images that can be clustered as part of a series or that can stand alone as individual images. Please submit your images as camera-ready JPEG files that are readable in any computer. Images should be sent via the electronic submission form.
Deliberations: The editorial staff of Hawk and Handsaw is dedicated to producing a high-quality, thematically coherent journal. We are accepting and reviewing submissions on a rolling basis, but due to the volume of submissions, we cannot respond to each submission. We will consider simultaneous submissions; however, we ask that you notify us immediately if your work has been accepted elsewhere.
Author Rights: Should your submission be selected for publication, you will be contacted via email by one of the editorial staff. Hawk & Handsaw takes first North American serial publication rights and electronic media publication rights. These rights revert to you after initial publication. It is possible that your work may be chosen as a sample to be included on our website after initial publication. If you have any objection to having work posted on our website, please let us know. We also ask, when your work is published again, that a credit line indicate that the work first appeared in Hawk & Handsaw – The Journal of Creative Sustainability.
